What are DID numbers?

DID (Direct Inward Dialing) numbers are telephone numbers assigned to your  PBX.IM  system that allow calls to be directed to specific phones within your organization without the need for an operator or manual intervention. In  PBX.IM , you can purchase as many DID numbers as you need. Please note that cost of this numbers is not included in the  Payment plans  .

How to buy a DID number

If you want to purchase a new DID number, click on "Buy DID," and a pop-up will appear.
Before proceeding further with purchasing a DID number, make sure you have a valid payment method. If you assistance you can read more in this section:  Manage Your Company & Billing 
Type
How to use it

Country
Select the country for which you want to purchase the DID number.
State
After selecting the country, you can choose a specific state within that country for the DID number.
Type
You can choose the type of DID number you want to add. The options available in the dropdown menu are:
    .1Geographic: A DID number tied to a specific geographic location, such as a city or region. These numbers are often used by businesses to establish a local presence in different areas.
    .2National: A DID number that is not tied to any specific geographic location within a country. These numbers can be used for nationwide services.
    .3Mobile: A DID number that is associated with mobile phone services. These numbers are used similarly to regular mobile phone numbers.
    .4Toll Free: A DID number that allows callers to reach a business or service without being charged for the call. These numbers are often used for customer service lines and typically begin with prefixes like 800, 888, or similar.
SMS Enabled Toggle
This switch allows you to enable or disable SMS capabilities for the DID number.
After completing all the fields above, simply click "Search," and  PBX.IM  will return the DID numbers that meet your criteria.

Let’s explore an example:
Suppose you want to buy a DID number from the US. After performing the search as explained above, the returned results will look like this:

Explanation
Prefix/Number
The prefix or area code of the phone number, represented as "+1 (XXX) XXX-XX-XX", where XXX indicates the specific area code and local number range.
City
The city associated with the specific geographic DID number.
Type
The type of DID number, which in our case is "Geographic", meaning it is tied to a specific location.
Setup
The one-time setup fee for activating the DID number.
Monthly
The recurring monthly cost to maintain the DID number. Each number, from our example, costs $1.26 per month.
Minute
This field shows the per-minute charge for incoming or outgoing calls.
Connect
The connection fee for each call made using this DID number. In this case, it's $0.00, meaning no additional charge.
SMS
Indicates whether SMS (text messaging) is enabled for the DID number. A checkmark (✓) signifies that SMS is available.
Init. Incr.
This refers to the initial increment of time billed for a call (e.g., the first 60 seconds).
Increment
The billing increment after the initial increment, usually measured in seconds (e.g., 6-second increments).
Available
The number of DID numbers available for that specific city.
Quantity
Allows you to select the quantity of DID numbers to purchase for a specific city. In our example it is default to 0. You can buy maximum 10 per number.
Total
The total monthly cost for the quantity selected, calculated as Monthly cost × Quantity. Each entry shows $3.26 as the total, assuming a quantity of 1.

Let's continue our example and say we choose to buy the first number. Now you need to select the number and click on ''Checkout''.

You will see a pop-up displaying the number you selected, the associated costs, and the total amount to be paid. After verifying that this is the purchase you want to make, click "Buy Now."

A pop-up will appear, prompting you to confirm your payment and indicating the credit card that will be charged.

How to edit a DID number

If you want to edit a DID number you previously purchased, return to the main page, where you can see a list of all the DIDs you’ve purchased.

The path is: Log in to  PBX.IM  → Call Routing → DID. Select the number you want to edit and click on Pencil .

Field
Explanation
Fax option
This dropdown allows you to specify how the VDID number will handle fax communications. The options available are:
  • Voice Only Destinations: Routes calls only to voice destinations, not handling fax communication.
  • Voice With Fax Detection: Detects if an incoming call is a fax and routes it accordingly. When this option is selected, additional fields such as "Detect Timeout," "Ringback Tone," and "FaxBox" become available. Detect Timeout - allows you to set the number of seconds the system should wait to detect whether an incoming call is a fax. Ringback Tone - you can choose the sound a caller hears while waiting for their call to be answered. FaxBox is a digital mailbox for faxes where detected faxes will be routed.
  • Direct Fax: Routes all incoming communications directly as a fax. When this option is selected, an "Emails" field appears to enter the email addresses where faxes will be received.
Destination
This dropdown menu lets you choose the destination where incoming calls to this DID number will be routed. You can choose between the following options:
  • User
  • Time Condition
  • Endpoint
  • Queue
  • Announcement
  • Forward
  • IVR
  • Voicemail
  • Ring Group
  • Conference
Description
A text box where you can enter a description for this DID number. This field is useful for adding notes or helping you with identifying the purpose of the DID number.
Labels
This field is used for tagging or categorizing the DID number with labels, making it easier to organize and search for in a list.
Calls Caller ID
This dropdown allows you to specify who should see the Caller ID when calls are made using this DID number. The options available are:
  • Nobody: No one will see the Caller ID.
  • Everybody: The Caller ID will be displayed to everyone.
  • Selected: Allows you to specify particular users or teams who will see the Caller ID. If you select this option you will see 2 additional options: Users and Teams where you can choose who you want to add.
SMS Caller ID
Similar to the "Calls Caller ID" field, this allows you to set the Caller ID that will be shown when sending SMS messages from this DID number. You will have the same options as above: ''Nobody'', ''Everybody'' and ''Selected''.
SIP URI
The SIP URI (Session Initiation Protocol Uniform Resource Identifier) is displayed here, showing the specific address associated with this DID number. You can use it to route calls to the correct endpoint. You can read more about how to setup Endpoints in  PBX.IM  in this section -  Endpoints
